Icats Car Security System
In the present era, car theft has become a key concern for many car owners, which even puts a great impact on car manufacturers. There are some car buyers who wish to buy a new set of wheels but change their decision and buy a used car just because they are afraid of the car being stolen. This directly affects the new car market and also ignites car manufacturers to introduce features and device that may save their car models from theft.
Keeping the security of cars in mind, Maruti Udyog introduced iCATs. iCATs, an acronym for intelligent Computerized Anti-Theft system’, is a car security system introduced by Maruti Udyog. The company has introduced this in its entire range of car models to reduce the possibilities and car theft.
Working of iCATs
iCATs is an electronically controlled device that mainly works on digitally encrypted codes. The system is tamper-proof and works on the principle of multiplexed communication, a system of simultaneous communication of varied information on the same circuit.
A transponder is inbuilt into the car keys along with an encrypted code and a unique electronic identification. This transponder digitally communicates with the electronic control unit of the car. When the car keys are inserted into the ignition lock, the transponder inbuilt in the keys sends signals to the control unit. On receiving these signals, the computer matches the secret codes and verifies the electronic identification. If these codes match with each other, the engine will ignite and if in case there is a mismatching, the car will not start. This in turn prevents the car from being stolen.
Standard Feature
The concept of car anti-theft device is not mandatory in India but Maruti still feels the need to make iCATs a standard feature across all its car models. The decision of making this mandatory is attributed to the growing numbers of car theft and lower rate of recovery.
Apart from Maruti Suzuki, cars manufacturers like Toyota Motors, Honda Siel Cars India Ltd and Ford Motors have also fitted a number of security devices like keyless entry, car alarms and remote-control locking compulsory in their range of car models.
