How To Install A Vehicle Security System/Car Alarm
The advantage of buying a car that does not have a pre-fitted alarm system - for yes, there is an advantage! - is that you can fit one of your choosing, one that is neither so sensitive that it goes off when a song thrush lands nearby, nor so numb that it only springs into action when the thieves are unscrewing the old licence plates and sealing it off for a respray. It may mean a bit of hard work, but who does not secretly love playing the mechanic on a Saturday afternoon? If you are planning to do it all on Saturday afternoon, though, make sure you start early on, because this is not a small job.
As a rule of thumb, installing a car alarm system can take more than one sitting, so the best time to install it is on a weekend when you will not be required to drive it on the Saturday night. If you get it all done on the first day that is great, but it is not a race. You will not get any extra points for finishing quickly, and if you rush things you can end up damaging the car or rendering the alarm system useless - meaning you have spent anything in the region of a few hundred dollars making your car slightly more difficult for the guy stealing it to drive. This will, admittedly, really frustrate him for as long as it takes to get it back to base.
You need to make sure you have the right tools - screwdriver set, wrenches and drill as well as some electrical kit. You will be working with exposed wires, so you will need wire cutters, soldering kit and insulating tape. Fitting the siren is your first step, so you need to find a solid metal surface under the hood where that will fit. A tip here is to have the horn of the siren pointing towards the ground so that moisture does not gather in the cup part of it. The instructions will vary between different alarms, but things to make sure of include ensuring that the battery cable is connected when testing switches and wire functions (to make sure they are working) and disconnected before you splice wires (to make sure you do not die).
